What is a Wizard?

You may be familiar with the concept of software wizards from programs such as Microsoft Word. Simply put its a way of making a task simpler, by only showing you relevant options/choices at one time, as opposed to having access to all options and needing to know what to pick when.

Taking a simple Wizard as an example in Messenger;

The Whole School Alert

Imagine there has been some bad weather and you need to alert all school contacts quickly and simply that the school is closed 'today'.

Without access to a wizard, you would have to be familiar with Messenger and know what options to choose from many that are not relevant to the scenario at hand.

However, using a Wizard, even an untrained user can alert the whole school to the closure in as little as 9 clicks of a mouse or taps on a tablet or mobile screen in as few as 20 seconds.

This quick video shows how simple it is to send an urgent message to the whole school.

Tiles Quick Start Guide

Messenger Tiles has been designed to be extremely simple and quick to use by most people, even those without prior Messenger training. Below is a very brief guide to get you started.

To send a message using one of the Wizards found in Messenger Tiles;

1. Select a Wizard from the home screen of Messenger. Select Wizard
2. Select from the options displayed on screen using the simple green and red sliders.

The options you see will differ from Wizard to Wizard. For example, using 'Email all Parents' you will not be able to select staff. It is this limited set of options that makes Wizards so fast and easy to use. If you require more options you can use 'Advanced Messaging'.

3. Select 'Next Step' when you have made your selection.

Select Recipients
4. Select the message format such as Email or SMS etc as appropriate.

5. Each Wizard will default to the appropriate preference for Message Frequency, but you can choose between 'Once per Parent' and 'For each student parent combination' if required.

Please see this page for more information on the use case for each option.

6. Select 'Next Step' when you have made your selection.

Select Format and Frequency
7. Chose from one of the message templates available or choose to write a new message.

You will only see the templates relevant to the Tile in which the Wizard you selected resides as specified in the Message Library. Full information on the Message Library is available here.

8. Select 'Next Step' when you have made your selection.

If you chose to write a new message in step 7, you will next see a Wizard screen allowing you to do this.

Select Message Template
9. When you have completed the Wizard you will see a summary screen. From here you can review your choices before sending the the message or going 'Back' to make any changes as required.

Additionally you also have access to 'Options' such as message translation and scheduling the message to be sent at a specific date/time.

Summary Screen

You can try out any Wizard available to you and play with the options in order to familiarise yourself. As long as you don't press 'Send' on the summary screen you can play to your heart's content without actually contacting parents! We encourage you to do this so that when you do need to send a message you have greater confidence in doing so.
