iOS7

Emerge and iOS7

iOS7 is available to;
- iPhone 4 and above
- iPod 5th Gen and later
- iPad 2 and above

From September 18th 2013, a new version of the Apple Operating System was made available to newer Apple devices. Along with this upgraded iOS, Apple forced a change that affects the way Emerge authenticates devices. In order to allow devices to work with your school MIS you will need to take some action.

Please note, this applies to existing Emerge devices only.

Any devices running iOS7 'out of the box' simply need to be treated as new devices and added to the console from scratch. Please see the Management Console Guide devices section if you are unfamiliar with this process.

Select the scenario most appropriate to your situation below:

I am a Groupcall Administrator/Network Manager with overall responsibility for a school
  • Your users will need to know the service URL for your Emerge installation.
    • You may like to proactively remind them of this information now in preparation for their devices reconnecting after the iOS upgrade.
  • They will also need to know their usernames and passwords.
    • Hopefully they will know them as they will have had to enter them on initial setup and periodically for security, but they may need to be reminded of usernames and/or reset their passwords in the Emerge Management Console.
  • Your Emerge Management Console needs to be running the latest version.
    • This can be identified by the version number 5.2.0.639+ found at the bottom left of the console.EMC_v5.2.0.639
    • All customers should have received this update; if you do not have the latest version please contact us. Devices running iOS7 with a server version older than 5.2.0.639 will not work.
  • If users have new devices running iOS7 out of the box you simply need to treat them as new devices and add them to the console from scratch. Please see the Management Console Guide devices section if you are unfamiliar with this process.
    • This will also apply if users changed device name during the iOS upgrade. Simply add those devices as if they were brand new to the school.

You will need:

  • The school Emerge Service URL
    • You would have been given this information when you first started using Emerge or you can copy it from Emerge before following the numbered steps below. Alternatively speak to your Groupcall Administrator/Network Manager and they should be able to provide it to you.
  • Your Emerge username
    • You would have been given this information when you first started using Emerge or you can copy it from Emerge before following the numbered steps below. Alternatively speak to your Groupcall Administrator/Network Manager.
  • Your Emerge password
    • You would have been given this information when you first started using Emerge and may have had to re-enter it periodically for security. Alternatively speak to your Groupcall Administrator/Network Manager to reset it in the Emerge Management Console.
      1. You should logout of Emerge whilst your device is running the older iOS version (eg 5 or 6 etc)
        • This prepares your Emerge App to re-authenticate with the school server when you do upgrade to iOS7.
        • From within Emerge select the settings cog from the App homescreen and then click 'logout' and accept the confirmation message.

      2. You can now upgrade to iOS7
        • Please do not change the device name during this process. If, for example, the device once belonged to a colleague, do not be tempted to change the device name to reflect the new owner; you can do this later once Emerge is working again.
      3. Once you have upgraded to iOS7 and your device is up and running again, you can now log back in to Emerge.
        • If you do encounter any issues after you upgrade to iOS7, try following the "I am an Emerge User with a device already upgraded to iOS7" instructions below.

How do I tell if my device has iOS7?

The appearance of the new operating system is very different. You can tell by looking at certain Apps, a selection of which are shown side by side below for ease of identification. The layout and background wallpaper of your particular device will of course differ.

If you have the newer icons shown on the right, you have iOS7 already installed on your device.

To re-authenticate a device after upgrading to iOS 7 with your school's Emerge Management Console you will need:

      • iTunes Credentials
        • You should have these as they are required to upgrade the Operating System.

removeiOS2

As you have already upgraded to iOS7, you can no longer log out of Emerge from the App settings menu, which you need to do in order for the server to make relevant changes. We therefore advise you to delete the App and re-install it as the quickest way of forcing a logout.

      • To remove an iOS App, simply press and hold the App until it 'wobbles', then press the x in the top left hand corner.
      • Accept the message confirming data will be deleted.

You can now install Emerge and then log back in.

IMPORTANT: When you have logged in as per the instructions, you will get an error message. This is expected and confirms that the server is verifying your device is permitted to connect post iOS upgrade.

Error (1003)
HTTP/1.1 502 Bad Gateway

Please select 'retry' and you will then be able to use the App again after a short pause for the latest MIS data to download.

Emerge_BadGateway_Retry

e.g. if the device once belonged to a colleague, and you changed the device name to reflect the new owner, the Management Console will not recognise the device as being permitted.

If for any reason you changed your device name during the iOS upgrade, retry will not work.

The device will need to be re-authenticated by your Groupcall Administrator/Network Manager. This is done from the Emerge Management Console.

As long as a device has connected to the school server at least once post iOS7 upgrade you can then change the device name.
