Emerge Device Proxy Settings

Many schools and local authorities control access to the Internet through a proxy server; Emerge of course allows for this scenario. You should ensure the Emerge Management Console is configured correctly prior to following any steps on devices here.

The various Operating Systems that support Emerge handle proxy configuration differently as you might expect; therefore you will find platform specific instructions below by clicking on the arrows.

This information implies a certain degree of technical understanding; you may need to seek support from an IT Technician or similar in your school.

Apple iOS

As Apple make both the hardware and the software, proxy handling is fairly straightforward on iOS devices.

Hence for the various scenario the following recommendations apply:

  • If your device doesn’t support a system proxy and you don’t need a proxy to access Emerge.
    • Then no configuration changes are required.
  • If your network requires a proxy and you need to use it to access Emerge.
    • Then you should set the system proxy on the device and leave the Emerge settings alone.
  • If your network requires a proxy and you can’t access Emerge via that proxy.
    • Then you should set the system proxy on the device and iOS will automatically detect the device settings and adjust its configuration accordingly.

Android

The key thing on Android is that there are lots of different ways to handle proxy based on Android version (e.g. Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich etc) and which Manufacturer built the platform (e.g. Nokia, Samsung, Google etc) on a specific device. The one global rule is that where a device supports a system proxy the use of that proxy is then mandatory for all apps unless a proxy exclusion for the service URL is also specified in the same settings page.

    • Then you should set the system proxy on the device and also set a proxy exclusion for the Emerge service URL on the proxy itself.
  • If your device doesn’t support a system proxy and you do need a proxy to access Emerge.
    • Then press the menu button on the Emerge logon screen to access the Emerge-specific proxy settings screen, and enter your settings there.
