Emerge – Installing and running the Demo

Introduction

This document has been created to explain how to download Emerge onto your device to allow you to test out the functionality with a sample hosted version of SIMS. Should you wish to trial Emerge with your school’s live data, including on other MISs, please contact Groupcall who will be happy to arrange this for you.

There are two demonstration databases to choose from:

  • Green Abbey - a secondary school
  • Water’s Edge School - a Primary database

Both of these contain dummy data provided by Capita. We suggest you choose the Admin role in either of these schools to see the full functionality of Emerge. The functionality within the App will be the same regardless of MIS, so if you use another MIS in your school, you can still get a feel for the App using SIMS data.

This document will take you through each of the steps to install the App, using screenshots as examples. It will take approximately 2 minutes.

Before you add Emerge to your device, you will need to make sure that you have an iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, Windows Live or other relevant App Store account as required by your device manufacturer - please make sure you have the credentials for one before proceeding.

Using Emerge for the First Time

The first time Emerge is used, it will download all of the information from the MIS. It won’t do this every time you use it, but it will do it periodically based on the different types of information it uses.

For example, it will only download student photographs every 10 days, but it will download student records once a day and attendance many times a day.

Emerge will manage this itself, so when you see “Fetching…”, some of the information is out of date and needs to be updated. All of this is configurable based on the preferences of the school subscribing to Emerge.

We cannot customise these settings for the demo system.

If you would like more detailed information on how to use Emerge please click here.

When using the demo system, please try the features out to see how well Emerge can update a hosted SIMS system running in another part of the country! We have optimised Emerge to be very fast, so any delays you may experience on the demo will be related to the geographically separate location - it will be faster in your school.

Security when using Emerge on the Demonstration system

On the demonstration system, the user credentials are automatically entered and remembered for you making it easier to access dummy data; however on a live system the security is much tighter.

In a school implementation, the system is configured to ask for;

  • A username and password once every day.
  • A passcode every hour or whenever the Emerge App is exited and re-accessed.

The Emerge passcode cannot be disabled and is different to the device passcode (which can be disabled).

If your technical people want to know how secure Emerge really is, we have a technical overview which they might like to read.
